Scientific Committee and Scientific Advisory Board

Terms of Reference


The aim of the Scientific Committee and Scientific Advisory Board are to promote multinational studies under the auspices of IAP. 

Key Responsibilities


  • Oversee the membership of the Scientific Advisory Board in consultation with the IAP Council, American Pancreatic Association (APA), European Pancreatic Club (EPC) and Japanese Pancreas Society (JPS)
  • Call for proposals for multinational projects to be conducted under the auspices of the IAP
  • Seek comment on submitted research protocols from appropriate members of the Scientific Advisory Committee
  • Make recommendations to Council in terms of studies to be promoted to the broader IAP membership
  • Recommendations should be made within six (6) weeks of receipt of the project details
  • Monitor progress of projects to ensure that research is conducted in accordance with the endorsed protocol

Advisory Board

  • Utilise networks within their region to encourage proposals for multinational studies to be conducted under the auspices of the IAP
  • Provide critical review of research protocols including review of feasibility, relevance and sustainability when requested by the Scientific Committee
  • Comments should be received no later than three (3) weeks from the request of the Scientific Committee



The Scientific Committee will consist of the Past President, the President, the President-Elect, the Secretary, the Treasurer, the Editor-in-Chief of Pancreatology and five (5) ordinary members of the Scientific Advisory Board as nominated by the IAP Council Executive. The Committee should consist of members from medical, surgical and basic science backgrounds and should be from a range of geographic locations.  Ordinary members will serve for the period of their membership on the Advisory Board subject to performance review by the Executive of IAP Council.

Advisory Board

The Advisory Board will consist of 30 members determined by the IAP Council. The membership will consist of at least five (5) members from each of the APA, EPC and JPS based on nominations from the regional societies; with the remaining members drawn from the broader IAP membership at the recommendation of the IAP Council Executive. Members will serve for staggered three-year terms with the possibility of a three-year extension subject to performance review by the Executive of IAP Council.

The Committee will routinely conduct business by email and may where necessary hold formal meetings via teleconference or web conferencing.

Reports To

The Committee reports to IAP Council.
